We created torontoelearning.com as a way to expand our reach and connect with Toronto’s elearning community. We do a lot of technical work and it made sense to use this approach to help out our local elearning colleagues and businesses.
We started with a vision of how the site could benefit each of our audience groups—elearning professionals, local companies looking for elearning assistance, and anyone else (especially students) interested in the Toronto elearning scene. For professionals, we wanted to provide a way to expand their reach (hence the directory and news feed), connect with others in the industry (the event calendar helps) and find new work (via the job and project boards). Businesses interested in elearning may want a list of local experts as well as a way to post jobs and projects. Students will find the news feed particularly valuable, and we also added the capability to set up personal @torontoelearning.com email addresses. For people starting out in the industry who just have Gmail and Hotmail addresses, a professional address can be particularly important.
The site is built on WordPress in a few days and uses a variety of plug-ins to get everything working smoothly. Everything at www.torontoelearning.com is free. We created it to improve our network, help the community and showcase some technical work that’s not elearning-specific. We hope you enjoy it!
